The Minimalist's Guide to Pro-Level Mixing: 5 Essential Plugins You Actually Need

Writer: Martin BonauerMartin Bonauer

Have you ever stared at your DAW, feeling overwhelmed by the endless scroll of plugins? I get it. After years of mixing everything from jazz ensembles to audiobooks in my Swiss studio, I've learned a crucial truth: more doesn't always mean better.

Today, I'm explaining my "less is more" approach, the same philosophy I teach in my upcoming book, Mix Craft.

While my studio boasts tools from FabFilter to Waves (and trust me, I love my gear), I've noticed a pattern. Ninety percent of the time, I reach for the same handful of plugins. Why? Because they work consistently and reliably.

Let's cut through the noise and focus on what matters:

  1. Your Go-To EQ

Think of EQ as an architectural design for sound. I wouldn't build a house without proper blueprints but never mix without a clean, precise EQ. My pick? FabFilter Pro-Q. It's like having a Swiss Army knife for frequency controlsurgical when needed and musical when not.

  2. The Workhorse Compressor

Remember: compression is like the foundation of a building. It needs to be solid but not overwhelming. Start with one versatile compressor and learn it inside out. The FabFilter Pro-C 2 has been my faithful companion for years.

  3. Reverb That Makes Sense

Here's where my architectural background comes in handy. Think of reverb as designing the acoustic space for your mix. One quality reverb (I often use Valhalla Room) is all you need to create depth and dimension.

Pro Tip: Treat your reverb like you'd treat room acoustics – less is often more.

  1. Reliable Metering

You wouldn't build without measuring tools, right? The same goes for mixing. A good metering plugin (like iZotope Insight) is your best friend for ensuring your mixes translate everywhere.

  2. One Character Plugin

This is your sound's personalitylike a building's unique façade. Whether you choose Soundtoys Decapitator or Kazrogs True Iron, master it.

The Real Secret?

It's not about having every plugin—it's about truly knowing the ones you have. Like architecture, where I focus on creating harmonious spaces with clean lines and purposeful design, your mixing toolkit should be intentional and well-understood.

Want to explore this minimalist mixing approach in greater depth? My upcoming book, Mix Craft, will do just that. It will explore these concepts in detail and show you how to achieve professional results without drowning in plugins.
